5 Pieces of Gym Equipment Every Women Needs at Home

Knowing your way around home gym equipment and knowing what you need for a home gym is an important part of your fitness program. Without the proper tools, you can work out for hours and never see the results you are trying to achieve.

Barbells – Barbells used in sports such as weightlifting, power lifting and body building. There are two main sizes of barbells: standard size barbells, and Olympic size barbells. Olympic barbells are generally regarded as the better choice and if you are going to take your lifting seriously an Olympic barbell is a necessity.

Most commonly barbells are used in major muscle exercises such as bench presses, shoulder presses and the various types of squats. The barbell allows you to spread the weight over a wider area and can help you use left and right side muscles together to help promote equal muscle growth.

Dumbbells – There are plenty of benefits that you will receive when you have dumbbells, and one of those benefits is the fact that you will be able to workout at the comfort of your own women home gym. Dumbbells happen to be super affordable compared to buying a membership at an actual gym.

Dumbbells are great for isolation exercises such as curls and extensions, but they can also be useful in exercises such as lunge squats.
Exercise Balls – Exercise balls are soft elastic balls that first appeared in Switzerland and are often referred to as Swiss balls. Also be referred to as stability balls, fitness balls, yoga balls and physio balls, they are often used by fitness professionals because of the stabilization benefits provided by exercise balls. When a person exercises sitting or laying on an exercise ball the unstable surface of the ball causes a nervous system reaction leading to an increased recruit of muscle to maintain balance.

This increased nervous system reaction helps you develop small muscle control and fine tunes your balance. This can be very helpful in every day life when doing real world tasks as simple as bending over and picking something up off of the floor.

Resistance Bands – Resistance bands are very flexible. Make sure to pick up a few different varieties. Most bands are color-coded according to tension level (e.g., light, medium, heavy, very heavy). It’s best to have at least three – light, medium and heavy since different muscle groups will require different levels of resistance.

Test them out before you use them and make for to buy comfortable and easy to use ones. Some bands you find in stores offer interchangeable handles, which means you have to take them off and on to use different bands. Some have handles that are larger than normal or made of hard plastic. Try to purchase resistance bands with padded handles that you don’t have to change out for each exercise or resistance change.

Exercise Mats – There are several different types of exercise mats. Some are larger and can be rolled up for storage. Others come in pieces and fit together like puzzles. The choice is largely up to the individual or gym where they are being used and purchased. Gym owners or people with home gym equipment can place mats under weight benches. The mats take the stress off floors or carpets. The weight of benches and barbells, plus the added weight of exercisers, can put indentations in carpets or floors–much like the legs or bottoms of large furniture pieces. The last thing you want in your home gym is a wreaked floor!

Mats also keep benches from sliding, or help prevent falls on slick floors. The mats can protect martial artists and wrestlers from the impact of falls. Weightlifters typically use the smaller mats which fit together like puzzles. Those in combat or physical sports need larger and heavier padded mats. Whatever the case, there are mats that meet anyone’s needs.

Now that you have a good understanding of the equipment needed for a great home gym workout, it’s time to see some results! These are the basics to buy and have for some killer results in any workout routine.
